English Poetic translation of ‘Tears of Blood’ by Bronislawa Wajs (1908-1987), aka ‘Papusza’. Recognised as the definitive witness account of the Roma holocaust in Volyhnia (formerly Poland, now in Ukraine) at the hands of Nazi Germany, Papusza’s 1086 line narrative poem recounts the privations of Romani people fleeing persecution in forests and villages through the extremes of winter, telling of their struggle for survival. Working in partnership with Dr Tomasz Kamusella, Roma academics Elena Marushiakova and Veselin Popov, and Romanes language specialist Viktor Shapoval to create the poetic English translation in the volume, this publication by Brill sources a hitherto unpublished, longer version of Papusza’s poem from a manuscript written in her own hand which was discovered in the library archives at Gorzóv Wielpolski in Poland in 2021.
